AUTUMN WORKSHOP

Times: 10am - 12pm

Venue: tbc (Cardiff)

Dates: Online course: Start: Mon 9th November - End: Mon 30th November

The Autumn Workshop is a four‑week course about craft, voice and creative momentum.

Sessions are small and conversational, focused on writing, practice and discussion, rather than lectures. There is no pressure to read aloud, but you are encouraged to share and discuss ideas, insights or works‑in‑progress. Each week introduces a different aspect of craft, giving you space to experiment, reflect and refine.

This course is offered in two formats: one in‑person (in Cardiff) and one online. Both follow the same structure so just book the one that is right for you.

Week 1 — Beginnings, Genre and Voice

We explore how writing starts: the spark, the tone, the voice that carries a piece forward. Through generative exercises and discussion, you’ll begin shaping the direction of your work for the weeks ahead.

Week 2 — Character and Perspective

Whether you are writing fiction, poetry, memoir or creative non‑fiction, this week focuses on who is speaking and why. We look at character and perspective and emotional resonance.

Week 3 — Structure, Shape & Rhythm

This session explores how writing moves and flows. We look at narrative shape, pacing, rhythm and the choices that give a piece momentum or stillness.

Week 4 — Refining and Next Steps

We explore how to deepen a piece, how to edit with intention and how to continue your writing practice beyond the course. Optional sharing is available, but never required.

Who leads the course

Col Howarth is a writer and former lecturer with an MA in Creative Writing (Distinction). Col has worked with major publishers and written across fiction, creative non‑fiction, poetry, monologue and screenwriting.

Workshops

Workshops are stand‑alone two‑to‑three hour online sessions.

They are practical, useful and focus on craft, technique and developing your writing practice. Themes may include editing, structure, voice, character or developing sustainable writing habits. Workshops are more structured than Creative Sessions (see below) and are designed to help you deepen your craft and produce meaningful work.

EDITING FOR CLARITY

Format: 1 x 2 hour online session

Date: Online course: Sunday 15th November

Times: 10am - 12pm

Fee: £10.00

A focused, two‑hour session exploring how to make your writing clearer, sharper and more intentional.

This workshop introduces practical editing tools that help you refine structure, strengthen voice, tighten sentences and remove the noise that distracts from meaning.

Through guided exercises and discussion, you will identify what a piece is really trying to say and how to shape it so the reader feels that intention. Suitable for writers at any stage, this session offers a calm, craft‑focused space to develop confidence in your editing process.

Creative Sessions

Creative Sessions are free, lightly guided gatherings designed to spark curiosity and connection.

Themes are typically sensory, experimental and seasonal: often outdoor meet‑ups about developing good writing habits, seasonal 'walk‑and‑write' activities and creative field note gathering, writing for the senses and more.

They are informal and social, and may be a bit more spontaneous: a way to enjoy creativity in good company, meet other writers, kick start your writing process and stay connected.
